Today’s Scripture:
“It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in people.” — Psalm 118:8 (NLT)
Psalm 118:8 is a concise yet powerful reminder of where our ultimate trust should lie. In a world that often encourages self-reliance and dependence on human connections for security and success, this verse calls us to place our trust first and foremost in the Lord. The psalmist experienced numerous challenges and recognized that while human support is valuable, it is ultimately limited. Human beings, despite their best intentions, can falter, change, or disappoint. In contrast, God’s love, wisdom, and providence are infallible and eternal.
This verse is part of a larger passage that celebrates God’s steadfast love and deliverance. The psalmist repeatedly testifies to God’s faithfulness and urges others to find refuge in Him. The emphasis here is on trust—leaning on God in times of trouble, uncertainty, and decision-making. Additional scriptures, such as Proverbs 3:5-6, echo this theme by instructing us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and not rely on our understanding.
Ask Yourself:
- In what areas of your life do you find yourself relying more on the approval or support of others rather than seeking refuge and guidance from God?
- How can you cultivate a deeper trust in God during times of uncertainty or when facing difficult decisions?
Take Action:
Begin by identifying moments in your life where you typically seek advice or validation from others. Instead, pause and commit these moments to prayer, asking God for His wisdom and guidance. Consider starting a gratitude journal specifically documenting instances where you have seen God’s faithfulness, which can serve as a reminder of why He is worthy of your trust. Make a conscious effort to transfer your dependence from people to God by setting aside time each day to read His Word and reflect on His promises.
Pray This:
Heavenly Father, I acknowledge that I often look to others for security and affirmation instead of seeking You first. Help me to place my trust where it truly belongs—in You alone. Teach me to find refuge in Your unwavering faithfulness and to remember that You are my ultimate source of strength and guidance. Cultivate in me a heart that is steadfastly aligned with Your will, and grant me the courage to trust You fully, even when I cannot see the way forward. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
